| POSTAL ITEMS BELONGING TO GAULEITER ADOLF WAGNER OF UPPER BAVARIA | |||||||||
|
During the course of his life, Gauleiter Wagner became an ardent stamp collector. To pursue this hobby, his secretary in Munich recalled in her interviews with the allies after the war that he often took advantage of the the issuance of "First Day Covers", which were forwarded to him by German consultates. Two (2) separate examples of this activity, which are each rare and unique on their own, without any connection to Gauleiter Wagner are included with this lot of items. The first of these is a first day cover for the flight of the Hindenburg airship. The second is a commemoration of the first flight of the PAA Airways clipper in June 1939, only two (2) months before the start of the war in Europe. What makes this latter item even more unique is that is was mailed and postmarked in Newfoundland when it was still an independent country and not part of the Canadian confederation. |
